It’s that time of year in Japan.

This is the first in a blog series called “Throwback Thursday”. It was interesting showing my old portfolios to people here in Australia. The conversations I had with some people inspired me to share some of my favourites from the past.

Hanami, which means “flower viewing” in Japanese, is a traditional Japanese custom that takes place every spring. During hanami, people gather to admire the beauty of cherry blossoms, or sakura, which bloom across Japan for a short period of time each year.

The cherry blossom season typically begins in late March or early April, depending on the location and weather conditions. During this time, people across Japan take part in hanami by picnicking under the cherry blossom trees, enjoying food and drinks with friends and family.

Hanami is not just about admiring the beauty of the cherry blossoms, it is also a time to celebrate the arrival of spring and new beginnings. The pink and white petals of the cherry blossoms are a symbol of renewal and hope, and many Japanese people use this time to reflect on their lives and set new goals for the coming year.

In addition to picnicking, hanami is also celebrated through a variety of traditional events and activities. Many temples and shrines hold special hanami ceremonies, while others hold traditional performances such as dance or music. Some cities also host hanami festivals, where people can enjoy food, music, and other entertainment under the cherry blossom trees.

Hanami is a cherished tradition in Japan and has been celebrated for centuries. In recent years, it has also gained popularity among visitors from around the world who come to Japan to experience the beauty of the cherry blossoms and take part in this unique cultural celebration.

In conclusion, hanami is a beautiful and meaningful tradition that is celebrated every spring in Japan. Whether you are a local or a visitor, it is a time to reflect on the beauty of nature, celebrate new beginnings, and enjoy the company of friends and family. If you ever have the opportunity to experience hanami in Japan, it is an experience you will never forget.
